Dark Fortress foi formada em 1994, em Landshut, na Alemanha. Dois anos depois, a banda lançou seu primeiro demo, Rebirth Of The Dark Age que começará a torná-los conhecidos do cenário underground do metal. Este sucesso rendeu-los a alcançar um CD split com o grupo Barad Dur, intitulado Towards Immortality ser lançado sob o selo Fog do Apocalipse Records.Após sucesso crescente, Dark Fortress lançou seu primeiro álbum de estúdio em 2001, Tales From Eternal Dusk , cujo som é inspirado por bandas como Dissection, Unanimated, Satyricon e Dimmu Borgir.Após algumas mudanças no line-up, a banda lançou um segundo álbum de estúdio, Profane Genocidal Creations, lançado em fevereiro de 2003, mostrando a evolução de Dark Fortress na mistura de clássico e Black Metal em sua música. Com um line-up estabilizado, o grupo pode finalmente ir em uma grande turnê com ainda mais popular do que bandas de metal extremo como Behemoth, Impaled Nazarene, Pungent Stench, God Dethroned entre outras bandas menos conhecidas da cena do metal.Durante o próximo ano, Dark Fortress lançou um terceiro álbum de estúdio, Stab Wounds, que irá revelar a cena do metal alemão e especialmente em toda a Europa.Seu próximo álbum, Séance, fica um sucesso ainda maior. O grupo torna-se mais do que apenas uma banda de black metal do underground alemão. Os principais temas do álbum estão tentando quebrar o estereótipo de letras do black metal voltados para a defesa do satanismo e suicídio. As letras deste album melhor lidar com o tema da fragilidade da existência humana e as ilusões da humanidade.Em 13 de maio de 2007, cantor, Azathoth, o grupo é devolvido por motivo de conflitos com outros membros do grupo, ele será substituído pelo vocalista Morean.Em 2008, a banda divulgou seu novo vocalista Eidolon.O novo álbum foi lançado Ylem 25 de janeiro de 2010 na Europa, uma nova música está disponível em sua página no MySpace.em 2014 lançaram seu mais recente trabalho, o álbum intitulado "Venereal Dawn"
