Gorguts é uma banda canadense de death metal oriunda de Quebec. A banda foi fundada em agosto de 1989 por Luc Lemay (guitarra, vocais) e Stéphane Provencher (bateria). Em junho de 1990, Gorguts — que então já incluía Sylvain Marcoux (guitarra) e Eric Giguere (baixo) em sua formação — gravou a demo tape “…And Then Comes Lividity”. A demo foi lançada pela banda em agosto do mesmo ano e vendeu mais de mil cópias. Com o sucesso que …And Then Comes Lividity fez no meio underground, Gorguts chamou a atenção da Roadrunner Records; na época uma das gravadoras mais proeminentes do metal extremo. Em fevereiro de 1991, Gorguts então assinou com a Roadrunner um contrato de gravação com extensão para cinco álbuns.
